Consequences of Playing Another Species: The Sore Thumb

Consequences of Playing Another Species: The Sore Thumb

I’m struggling. I’m playing a dwarf in a Rogue campaign for Unchained Heroes and my mind is screaming at me all the time about the craziness of my choice. What was I thinking? Why am I a dwarf? As a rogue, that has to be just about the dumbest choice I could have made. At least a halfling rogue or a gnome rogue has size on their side. What does a dwarf have? I have to spend all my time not being seen and not drawing attention to myself. My GM is rolling with this and has no idea about my conundrum (now he probably does), but my desire to make...

Optional Rules: But it’s not in the Rulebook!

Optional Rules: But it’s not in the Rulebook!

“But it’s not in the Rulebook!” some people might say when presented with a Fan Made rule. Don’t let that kind of talk stop you. If you have a great idea, use it anyway. You might be able to tweak an ability here, make an action occur more smoothly there, or simplify combat with “one simple trick.” I am in favor of optional rules and encourage you to make them for Unchained Heroes. Unchained Heroes spawned out of making so many optional rules for my favorite game systems that it made a lot more sense to make my own game. The “optional...

What you want to know, but haven’t asked about Unchained Heroes

It was a little over two and a half months ago that the Unchained Heroes RPG was released to the world. It has felt like it has been much longer and in some ways it has. On the day Unchained Heroes was released I was fortunate enough to talk with Dan Davenport and do a Q&A session. For those of you that have not seen it, here it is: #RGPNET Dan Davenport interviews Kurt Patz, the Creator of Unchained Heroes RPG It asks many of those questions that you probably had about the game system. There have been a lot of questions about how the...

Touring the Realms, Part 3: The Hotbed that is Peloria

Are you ready to explore a wild and untamed land? A place that barely tolerates civilization and where it does, it makes life exciting and volatile? In this installment of Touring the Floating Realms, we add Peloria to the mix. Peloria is a wild and wonderful land which will give you many years of entertainment. It is a constantly changing and shifting world where Gaia is known by Her Wrath more so than her calm benevolence. The climate, geography, and landscape matches Her extreme temper. Peloria is highly prized as a trade route between the...

How my subconscious made me into Captain A. Marek

How my subconscious made me into Captain A. Marek

I love Captain America. No joke. Steve Rogers played by Chris Evans is my favorite superhero, hands down. When I had the chance to play an Unchained Heroes campaign with my friends, I chose to be a Paladin and make him just like the Captain. I intended to emulate him in actions and deeds and not be a direct copy of him, but my subconscious played a little trick on me. Without realizing it, my character took on his full persona and then paid homage to his name when I made an alias for him. I am not kidding when I say it was an accident...

Get thee behind me, Meta!

Get thee behind me, Meta!

Slay the meta. Get thee behind me, Meta! I shall not be beholden to you! Tell me how you really feel, right? Ok, here it goes. I’ve been working on a lot of setting content for Unchained Heroes lately. It’s fun to share it with you all and hear about the thoughts everyone has on it, but you might be surprised to hear that making a setting isn’t part of my game philosophy. In fact, when presented with a setting, I often find myself saying, “Get thee behind me, Meta!” and biblically destroying the universe that I am presented with. I...

The Necromancer Class Story and Class Preview

Today I present to you the story for our new Iconic character, Sidra the Necromancer, for the Unchained Heroes RPG. It is written by Jennifer Patz. After the short story I give you a preview of the powers that the Necromancer Hero class has at their disposal from level 1 onward. Necromancer Class Icon – Sidra the Necromancer Sidra moved up next to a long blackened wood table in the center of the laboratory, hoping to find something to bring back to the constable so she could clear her name. As she rummaged through the piles that...

The Zetian Archangel Combat Vessel

The Zetian Empire of Eld is a mighty kingdom, ruled by an ironfisted belief in the One True God as found in their holiest of texts, the Zetathan. Zetia tolerates outsiders only so much as they are needed for their kingdom to thrive. Throughout their history, they have not been aggressive in extending their borders or in acquiring new converts. They preach to any who would listen and prefer to stay tightly within the borders of Zetia. They live out their lives peacefully by deploying a heavy deterrent that was until recently, entirely...

Basilisk Lore Unlocked!

We learned about Dragons this week, so I thought it would be appropriate to talk about Basilisks as well. Unchained Heroes and the universe we stage it in, has a unique approach to both of these creatures. Basilisks are the bestial flying reptiles that are both a nuisance and boon to the people of Veerith. They are pets, instruments of war, guardians, and villains. One of them might be a family friend that loves to be itched under the chin, another might be girded and trained for war, another might be used to protect the family ranch,...
