A Rough Road makes a Bend

The past few months have been rough. After the infamous trademark dispute took Chronos off the market, I wasn’t sure if I would be working in the world of roleplaying games anymore. I went through my own stages of grief: denial (No way is this for real), defiance (I’m not going to let them take me down), anger (how dare they do this to a fellow small publisher?), resignation (it’s not worth fighting anymore), depression (Do I really want to do this anymore?), and lastly back to acceptance (I will change, move on, and grow). In my anger phase, I had a flurry of activity as I picked up a trademark for Unchained Heroes, grabbed 3 different website names, and modified my community sites. That groundwork is the foundation that we are building upon as the website has been relaunched under the new name, new logo, and new look. Where once I was wondering what I was going to do, now I am excited about the new possibilities.

We will truly be Unchained…

With a new name and a new start, I feel a realignment is in order for Unchained Heroes. True to that name, I intend to break the chains that bound me on this website and the direction of the game. First of all, the website is going to branch out from Unchained Heroes to discuss the wider world of RPGs. We will still focus on the Unchained Heroes RPG and the Real Time Combat Engine, but we will also point a spotlight on other games we are playing, the lessons we learned from playing these games, and most importantly, discuss our exciting adventures. A good friend of mine can often be heard saying, “Play more games!” and I agree with her wholeheartedly. We all need to play more games; getting together with friends to play Tabletop RPGs has been some of the most rewarding experiences I have had in my life. Building Chronos, now Unchained Heroes was a fantastic experience and discovering the many different games out there feels very similar. I want to share those experiences and let everyone know about the great times you can have with the various systems.

Time to Expand the Story…

The second change I want to make on the Unchained Heroes game is to get more focused on the Story Content that we provide. Unchained Heroes is a Fantasy Core Rulebook, meaning it has all the core rules with a Fantasy Flavor. I want to expand beyond the rules into building a rich world, one that can be delivered to you through our website and the community pages on various sites. That means more talk about the Floating Realms, it many continents, and the spirit of the Multiverse that I have created. Those of you that are fans of Michael Moorcock will likely see some influence from him as well as George R.R. Martin, Raymond Feist, and Jim Butcher. The fantasy universe of Unchained Heroes was created over the course of 20 years. There is a lot to explore and a lot to tell you about. I hope to inspire you with some of my stories for your own campaigns.

Getting excited about what we do best…

The third change I want to make is to redefine and focus on the core of the game to build a player base. Unchained Heroes is an accessible game to anyone, but I need to market its strong points more often, its focus on player mastery, game mechanics, exciting combat, and its heroic powers need to be put in the spotlight. Instead of trying to be all things to everyone, I want to show how fun Unchained Heroes will be for those with an interest in it. Unchained Heroes gives you hard hitting and powerful characters with fantastic abilities that can be tweaked to your heart’s content. We have 10 Hero Classes with multiple play styles within each that make upwards of 30 types of Heroes to play. I want to get people as excited about it as I am.

Maintain Balance in all things…

The fourth change I want to make some is to alter how I work on the game. I am a one man shop with a supportive family and group of friends. To maintain interest in Unchained Heroes in all aspects of it as a business, a hobby, and a growing world, I will need to make sure I keep having fun. I will strive to balance work, life, and hobbies more evenly to stay centered.

Increase Accessibility and Contributors…

Lastly, the final change I wish to make to Unchained Heroes and my overall philosophy is to work on expanding the contributors to the game and to the website. First of all, this means I need to rebuild my System Resource Document to get the game into the most hands possible. Secondly, and more importantly, I want to make sure that those that play Unchained Heroes feel free to contribute to the growing game. I plan to work on increasing involvement, having guest authors on the site, grant moderator privileges to more people, and build a community that will endure. We are already over 100 strong on G+ and 500 strong on Facebook. By spreading the word, I hope to make that grow. For all of you that have been long time members, I thank you and appreciate your contributions; your encouragement has helped me keep going.
