Optional Rules: But it’s not in the Rulebook!

“But it’s not in the Rulebook!” some people might say when presented with a Fan Made rule. Don’t let that kind of talk stop you. If you have a great idea, use it anyway. You might be able to tweak an ability here, make an action occur more smoothly there, or simplify combat with “one simple trick.” I am in favor of optional rules and encourage you to make them for Unchained Heroes. Unchained Heroes spawned out of making so many optional rules for my favorite game systems that it made a lot more sense to make my own game. The “optional rules” ended up being built in as part of its...

What you want to know, but haven’t asked about Unchained Heroes

It was a little over two and a half months ago that the Unchained Heroes RPG was released to the world. It has felt like it has been much longer and in some ways it has. On the day Unchained Heroes was released I was fortunate enough to talk with Dan Davenport and do a Q&A session. For those of you that have not seen it, here it is: #RGPNET Dan Davenport interviews Kurt Patz, the Creator of Unchained Heroes RPG It asks many of those questions that you probably had about the game system. How my subconscious made me into Captain A. Marek

I love Captain America. No joke. Steve Rogers played by Chris Evans is my favorite superhero, hands down. When I had the chance to play an Unchained Heroes campaign with my friends, I chose to be a Paladin and make him just like the Captain. I intended to emulate him in actions and deeds and not be a direct copy of him, but my subconscious played a little trick on me. Without realizing it, my character took on his full persona and then paid homage to his name when I made an alias for him. I am not kidding when I say it was an accident that Saul Antipova became Steven A. Marek. Steven?...

Get thee behind me, Meta!

Slay the meta. Get thee behind me, Meta! I shall not be beholden to you! Tell me how you really feel, right? Ok, here it goes. I’ve been working on a lot of setting content for Unchained Heroes lately. It’s fun to share it with you all and hear about the thoughts everyone has on it, but you might be surprised to hear that making a setting isn’t part of my game philosophy. In fact, when presented with a setting, I often find myself saying, “Get thee behind me, Meta!” and biblically destroying the universe that I am presented with. I don’t like running other people’s settings,...
