We can be Heroes, Part 1: Going wherever we dare!

Did you ever think about how much power we have as a participant in a Role-playing Game? We can be Heroes every time we pull out our character sheet and prepare to roll some dice. We can also be absolutely villainous. Hero or villain, it all boils down to one fact: we are ultimately more in control of our destiny in a RPG than we are in real life and that is awesome. We go wherever we dare and our only boundary is our own imagination. In the first part of this series I want to celebrate the good times and in the second installment I will analyze this phenomenon. This is the first part, so...

Final Fantasy brought me into the Hobby

What brought you into the hobby? For me it was video games, specifically the Final Fantasy II (US Version)® and Dragon Warrior III® games. Those two put me over the top. After defeating them, I had to keep playing. I didn’t just want to replay the games, I had done that many times already. I wanted to make my own adventures as a Dark Knight, a Paladin, and a Dragoon! I wanted more and different stories. I wanted to be Cecil and Kain, fight as the Dragon Warrior, and travel to the moon. Unchained Heroes: Gritty Fantasy Hack

If you are looking to run a Low Fantasy, gritty, Unchained Heroes Campaign, this hack is for you. Each section of this hack will tell you how to quickly adapt the High Fantasy Gaming of Unchained Heroes into a more low-key and gritty setting. What is Low Fantasy you might be asking? If you need a comparison, think of the Conan Universe or even Lord of the Rings. In those universes, magic...

The Talent’s Time to Shine

There is always a lot of debate about roll-playing versus role-playing. Criticisms of how a person plays have been kicking around since this hobby began, and I believe we’re no closer to a consensus on what the “right” way to play is since we started. My opinion of gaming is as long as you’re having fun, and that fun is not somehow at the expense of another person at the table, you’re doing it right. I also think that roll vs. role is a moot point. In most tabletop games, both have their time and place. You don’t want either one to suffer. Different games fall on different parts of the...

My Princess Monster Wife

Sometimes I sit around and think about all the things I would do if I made a new game system from scratch. The image of Princess Monster Wife then hits me like a hammer, but I can’t help myself, I’m like the Ice King that sees a bunch of beautiful things and wants to put them all together. I am always thinking about the next version, the next twist, the next game mechanic. I really can’t help myself; I tinker a lot. I see stuff and it inspires me to jot down ideas and create; I love games. I have quite a few games on my playlist besides my own, believe it or not and my favorite systems right...
